The Glass Ceiling - Fact Or Fiction?
What part do our beliefs play in the existence of the ‘glass ceiling’?

‘a ceiling based on attitudinal or organisational bias
in the work force that prevents minorities and women from advancing to leadership positions’
The term the ‘glass ceiling’ has been a much used metaphor to describe the inequality between men and women in the workplace in senior positions.
There are undoubtedly still inequities when it comes to men and women in the workforce. The latest research paper from the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) indicates that there has been negligible improvement overall in the representation of women on Australian boards and in executive management roles, with numbers declining for the first time between 2006 and 2008.
The data collected suggests that the average female remuneration in middle management is 71.1% of the male medium and female remuneration in line positions is 89% of that of men in line positions. There are some differences across the public and private sectors with slightly less discrepancy in the public sector largely due to the ‘levels’ which apply to positions. However, inequities still exist.
In addition, women generally accumulate 20% less superannuation in their lifetime than men (in equal jobs).
